What do JA Volunteers do?

·         Junior Achievement volunteers serve as role models in the classroom.  They present lessons that teach students about business, economics, and free enterprise.

·         Volunteers choose the grade level and school/district where they would like to be placed.

·         Elementary School volunteers conduct one lesson per week for five weeks.   The approximate time for an elementary lesson is 30-40 minutes.  Middle grade volunteers conduct one lesson per week for eight weeks.  The approximate time for a lesson is 45-50 minutes.  High school volunteers conduct one lesson per week for ten weeks.  The approximate time for a lesson is 45-55 minutes.

·         All new elementary and middle grade volunteers must attend a 2 ½ - hour training.  New high school volunteers must attend a 4-hour training.

·         All materials and lesson plans are provided by Junior Achievement.  The JA curriculum has been developed by professional educators to be easy for everyone to follow.  The lessons are age-appropriate, hands-on, informative and fun.  Volunteers receive their “kits” filled with activities and lesson plans during training.

·         Elementary volunteers coordinate the time and day of their classroom visits with the teacher.  Middle grade and high school volunteers visit the classroom at a specific time of the day but may choose the day of the week that is most convenient.

·         Once trained, preparation for each class should be minimal.

·         Volunteers should have the desire to work with young people, be flexible and possess a high level of energy and enthusiasm.

JA volunteers have the opportunity to give back to the community, sharpen presentation skills and meet new people.
